BlackBerry Bold Challenges

In process of upgrading to a BlackBerry Bold (acquired 2008-11-04) and writing up my BlackBerryBoldTips, I've encountered a number of challenges (perhaps problems), and am capturing them for the moment from a user's perspective.

Email accounts did not transfer

On your new BlackBerry, the email accounts from your previous BlackBerry didn't transfer automatically.

Solution:

  • you have to login to https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=mycingular
  • click "Change Device" in the "Settings" section on the left side and follow instructions, e.g.
    • in your BlackBerry Bold, go to Home, Settings, Options, Status and note the Device PIN and Device IMEI
    • enter that Device PIN and Device IMEI on the "Change Device" page and click Save. No need to turn off your BlackBerry.
    • very soon thereafter, your email accounts from your previous BlackBerry will show up as separate mailbox icons on your new BlackBerry, as well as having all their new messages show up in your integrated messages app.

Voicemail did not transfer

On your new BlackBerry, there is no indicator of any outstanding voicemail that you know you had on your previous BlackBerry.

The voicemail appears to not transfer (seemed to get cleared out?) because new BlackBerry doesn't show any voicemail indicator, however, as soon as you get *another* voicemail, the indicator shows up with the total number of messages, old and new.

Try calling yourself and leaving yourself a message to trigger a voicemail status update to your new BlackBerry.

A problem occurred while trying to render the page

If you get the message "A problem occurred while trying to render the page" when you navigate to nearly any web page:

  • choose "Options" from the menu
  • choose "Cache Operations"
  • click "Clear" to the right of where it says "Content Cache"
