Buildering 101

 

 

The Rules

  1. Don't die. Very simple. Don't die, because it really is a pain in the ass for everyone else if you do. If you think you might die, you're probably right, so don't do it.
  2. No alcohol+buildering. These two do not mix. No matter how good you are when sober, the loss of even *some* judgment is enough to disqualify you from buildering even after one drink. (2008-05)
  3. Be able to easily/regularly boulder V2s. You need to have at least a baseline level of bouldering skill in order to be able to builder with any degree of certainty/reliability/safety. Being able to regularly/easily boulder V2s in the gym means you have learned enough to do a decent job judging different hand/foot holds, how much weight they can bear, if they might break, etc. Also, by the time you are able to do V2s, you also have sufficient skill to recover and catch yourself if one of the holds you are using gives way. (NM 2008-03, CJ 2008-05)
  4. Don't break stuff. If you leave a buildering site undamaged, like you found it, there's a better chance that you (and others) will be able to builder it again. If you're not sure if you can builder something without damaging it, then don't. (NM 2008-03)
  5. Don't climb with a bad/sensitive back. (SM 2008-09)

 

Rule #1 is obvious, and rules #2-5 have been determined from observation.

 

FAQ

 

How do I get down?

This is a very important question, and one to strongly consider before attempting any buildering problem, as it is almost always harder to get down than it is to get up. So in order of preference:

  1. climb up to places that you can walk down.
  2. climb up to places that have an easy climb down (like up a wall, then down some stairs).
  3. practice climbing up a little, then climbing down a little. As you get more comfortable climbing down, you can climb up a bit further.
