Web Books

I'm often asked how to get started in building stuff for the web.

The best way to learn is by doing, and the easiest way to do is to start writing and publishing your own HTML + CSS content on the public web, guided with the following books:

• Read Jeffrey Zeldman's Designing With Web Standards 3rd edition cover to cover.
• Read Emily Lewis's Microformats book cover to cover.
• Reference Jennifer Niederst's Web Design In A Nutshell Third Edition, which provides excellent documentation of modern (X)HTML + CSS authoring practices. Absolutely essential to get the THIRD edition which has been completely rewritten from the previous edition.
• Read John Allsopp's Developing With Web Standards cover to cover.

This list is just a start and horribly incomplete, but better a start than nothing at all. There are many more awesome modern web authoring/design/development books by additional top notch modern web design/development authors such as Dan Cederholm, Jeremy Keith, Eric Meyer, Jeffrey Veen etc (also an incomplete list) that I recommend you read.
