On 2008-07-11 I bought a MacBook to use as spare laptop around the house, both for multitasking (until Apple can fix MacOSX and built-in apps to not rainbow cursor lockup everyday - I'm looking at you: ~SystemUIServer, NotficationServer, Image Capture, Safari), and as a spare laptop to play music, burn CDs, and for visitors to use.
See LaptopCriteria for some of the background and criteria for why I chose a MacBook as my secondary / home laptop.
Here are prices and links in case you want to do the same.

That plus AppleCare and shipping to San Francisco, California came out to:
$1,360.09 MB + AC (w CA tax).
$99.97+3.99 shipping - 1.49 shipping discount = $102.47
Note: how to install RAM in a MacBook: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1651
Thus if I've done the math right, this comes out to an out the door (OTD) total of:
$1462.56 for MacBook 2.2GHz/1G/120G/Superdrive + AppleCare + 3rd party 4GB RAM upgrade.
