Bouncing

The privilege of controlling the virtual red velvet rope. Sign up for a shift (two people per shift ideally a girl and a boy). Your job is simple. Bounce anyone you deem as sketchy or creepy and enforce Valentines Commons protocols (see the FAQ below). You have to make sure people showing up are on the list above, or are a "bring a friend" as discussed. You can decide on the spot if you want to let them in as your bring a friend.

  • 7pm-8pm: Tantek and ...
  • 8pm-9pm: ... and ...
  • 9pm-10pm: ... and ...
  • 10pm-11pm: Carla and ...
  • 11pm-midnight: Sean and ...
  • midnight - admission closed (unless you have made prior arrangements).

Activities

Potluck dinner

Home cooked / potluck pink/white/red/black foods (if the chocolate or coffee is dark enough, it counts as black). Put your name down if you're in for dinner!

  • Tantek & Sean will be hitting up Trader Joe's, make requests here:
    • red wine
    • dark organic chocolate
    • ...
  • Ariel (if the food is more enticing than the pillow fighting ;)
  • Morgan S. will be preparing chocolate fondue. Also bringing strawberries and banana's for dipping.
  • Carla will bring edamame tapenade & mushroom pate, both vegan, but will not be there until after 9
  • ...
  • anyone have a big punch bowl they could bring?
  • ...

Discussions

At last year's party, the dinner discussions were a big hit. Some topics carried forward, and others new. Feel free to add:

  • geek 2 Geek (g2g) social interactions
  • geek 2 non-Geek interactions (or: how to bring up preferred modes of communication aka getting with the IM/texting program)
  • dating etiquette - or - is dating obsolete?
  • does multitasking help or hurt? do you have to be one to be with one?
  • twittering/blogging/public discourse about your love life
  • at what stage do you change your XFN relationship status (or relationship status on social network silos, e.g. Facebook)?
    • are there any relationship statuses that you want to publicly express but aren't covered by XFN?
  • when to introduce people to your friends
  • ...

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Valentines Commons protocols.

Can I attend?

If you put your name on the above list by 2008-02-13, you're in.

Otherwise, you must know (have met in person) at least four people on the above list of who's in, and you must know that at least one of them will make out with you (don't worry, we'll check at the door). And you must be old enough to vote. Duh.

What if I only know less than four people on the list?

Get one of them to bring you as a friend. Refer them to next FAQ:

Can I bring a friend?

Yes you can bring a friend, even a found friend you just met at the pillow fight thingie, but he or she must be someone you both would consider making out with, and would be ok with if he or she made out with other folks at the party (see games above).

These requirements are both to keep the numbers reasonable, and to keep the atmosphere comfortable. In other words if you wouldn't make out with the person, don't bring them - if they can't meet your quality bar, why would you expect them to meet anyone else's?. And if you want them for yourself (like you might be jealous if they made out with others), don't bring them - no proprietary friends, Valentines Commons encourages sharing.

And to be clear, bringing a friend means bringing a friend, not simply inviting a friend. You have to either accompany your friend, or already be at the party.

What is that symbol

The <8> symbol, generally referred to as the "infinite hearts of the Valentines Commons", is the symbol of the The Magnific Order of Valentines Commons (similar to the <o> symbol of the The Magnific Order of Rambaldi). The followers of the Valentines Commons, entrusted with safeguarding its principles, protocols, and procedures, may display the <8> mark on their hands (perhaps similar to how The Magnific Order of Rambaldi marked their hands).

Lessons for the future

  • Champagne seemed popular. 4 bottles for ~20 was insufficient. 1:2 champagne:people might be about right.
  • STB exemptions, in addition to gender-preference(s), allow non-co-worker preference too.
  • I completely forgot to reference this blog post from 1/22/08
    • "Make Out Party. The first rule of Make Out Party is… you have to make out with someone before you talk to them. OK so basic idea here is inverting the social schema of meeting someone at a party, chatting them up for a few hours and maybe making out with them later on but throwing a party where in order to talk to someone you would first have to make out with them. Not some wimpy peck on the cheek either, really make out with them. Obviously there’s a ton of details to work out before this could actually happen, some kind of signifier noting if you were ok with kissing someone of your same sex, some kind of policy requiring you to bring someone you were sure most people at the party wouldn’t already know (because it would be pointless if you walked in and knew everyone there), and um, probably a lot of other stuff. I’m pretty sure this idea was sparked after a friend referred to himself as a kissing slut."
  • Wondering if this should just be called <8> or something, so as not to tie it to a specific date. People keep asking me if we're going to have an event like this in LA or at SXSW

your failed dating model<p>is not our problem...
